The prison administration, led by Warden Caputo and MCC (the private company that runs the prison), tried to cover up Poussey's death and protect Bayley from prosecution. They also refused to release Poussey's name to the public or to her family. This infuriated Taystee, who hacked Caputo's computer and leaked his phone number to the press. She also confronted him in his office and demanded that he say Poussey's name and admit that she was murdered.
The inmates take over the prison
Meanwhile, Daya, a pregnant inmate who was involved with CO Bennett (who abandoned her and their baby), got hold of a gun that was smuggled into the prison by another CO, Humphrey. Humphrey was a sadistic guard who enjoyed torturing and humiliating the inmates. He had forced Maritza, a Hispanic inmate, to eat a live mouse; he had made Suzanne, an unstable inmate known as Crazy Eyes, fight another inmate; and he had threatened to shoot Alex, Piper's girlfriend.
Daya pointed the gun at Humphrey and was pressured by her fellow Hispanic inmates to shoot him. She hesitated, but eventually pulled the trigger and shot him in the leg. This sparked a riot in the prison, as the inmates seized control of the facility and took several COs hostage. Daya lost track of the gun, which changed hands several times throughout the season.
The inmates split into different factions based on their race, religion, or interests. Some used the riot as an opportunity to have fun, party, or loot; others used it as a chance to settle scores, seek revenge, or assert their power; and others used it as a platform to voice their grievances, demand their rights The negotiations and the demands
As the riot continued, Taystee emerged as the leader of the inmates and the spokesperson for their cause. She formed a team with Black Cindy, Alison, Janae, and Nicky, and they used a video camera and a phone to communicate with the outside world. They also used Flaca and Maritza, two Hispanic inmates who had a popular YouTube channel, to spread their message on social media.
Taystee and her team came up with a list of 10 demands that they wanted MCC and the government to meet in exchange for ending the riot and releasing the hostages. The demands included better healthcare, education, and food; amnesty for the inmates involved in the riot; the arrest of CO Bayley for Poussey's death; and a memorial for Poussey in the prison library.
They managed to get in touch with Caputo, who was sympathetic to their cause and tried to help them negotiate with MCC and the governor. However, they faced many obstacles and challenges, such as MCC's attempts to manipulate the media and public opinion; the governor's reluctance to give in to the inmates' demands; the interference of other inmates who had their own agendas or interests; and the internal conflicts and disagreements among Taystee's team.
The return of Piscatella
Another major threat that loomed over the inmates during the riot was the return of Piscatella, the former captain of the COs who had been transferred to another prison after his abusive and violent behavior was exposed. Piscatella was a tall, muscular, and intimidating man who had a history of torturing and killing inmates, especially gay men. He had a personal vendetta against Red, an older Russian inmate who ran the prison kitchen, because she had challenged his authority and exposed his secrets.
Piscatella sneaked into the prison during the night and kidnapped several inmates who were close to Red, including Alex, Piper, Nicky, Big Boo, Blanca, and Frieda. He took them to a secret bunker and tortured them one by one, while Red watched helplessly. He cut off Red's hair, burned Alex's arm, broke Blanca's finger, and threatened to kill them all.
However, he was eventually stopped by Gina, one of Red's friends, who electrocuted him with a booby trap that Frieda had set up. The inmates then tied him up and debated what to do with him. Some wanted to kill him or torture him back; others wanted to use him as leverage or exchange him for their demands; and others wanted to let him go or turn him over to the authorities.
The end of the riot and the fate of the inmates
The riot came to an end after 72 hours, when Taystee decided to reject MCC's offer of meeting nine out of their 10 demands (excluding the arrest of Bayley) and instead chose to stand up for Poussey's justice. She announced her decision to Caputo on live TV, which prompted MCC and the governor to send in a SWAT team to storm the prison and restore order.
The SWAT team used force and violence to subdue the inmates and evacuate them from the prison. Many inmates were injured or killed during the raid, including Humphrey (who died from a stroke caused by Suzanne's medication) and Piscatella (who was shot in the head by a trigger-happy officer). The inmates were separated from their friends or loved ones and put on buses that would take them to different prisons. Some inmates managed to escape or hide from the SWAT team, such as Chang (who ran away through a hole in the fence) and Frieda (who retreated to her secret bunker with some other inmates).
